The Erie Hound Dogs

Artisan Crafted Beach Glass and Sea Glass Jewelry
Est.2021

We're The Erie Hound Dogs. Hound dog? What do you mean? No, it doesn't pertain to our fuzzy four legged friends that we love endlessly 🐾 Our name is a derivative of the slang term given to those who set out on a quest for those fascinating rocks and fossils that they must have for their collection at home. That term is "rock hounding". We've developed a trade to transform natural sandy treasures into ellegant beach glass jewelery. We also strive to provide a wealth of knowledge and understanding into the sacred art of beach glass hunting. Join us, as we dive into what it takes to become a certified hound dog! 🐕

Our Mission

The Erie Hound Dogs were founded in summer of 2021. My fiance and I created the organization to lend our expertise and knowledge of the art of beach glass collecting to those who are curious and ambitious to start their own hunting expedition. We also offer a vast array of fine jewelery crafted with various beautiful colors of glass that we've spent many years pursuing. Our collection is sure to capture your love for these alluring, frosty, beach diamonds in the rough!
Black Glass
Yes, it exists! Black glass has been used for many years. It's primary use was to store and transport such things as rum and beer on merchant and pirate vessels between approximately 1700 through the early 1800's, but it has been around since the 1500's! Due to the fact that most black glass bottles were made in Europe, it's quite amazing to think how far that glass has travelled to our sandy beaches at home. A few aspects make black glass one of the most sought after glasses. One reason is if you're looking down at the rocks and sand beneath your feet, you'll notice many plain black rocks. They have either a long oval or smooth circle shape. Believe it or not, black glass isn't always black (odd, yes). Even though there is a black glass that is true black, it usually has a dark olive appearence with either specks or stripes of black running through it; this is due to the presence of trace amounts of iron slag that's been added during the hand blowing process to increase the strength and longevity. And also, the dark hue blocked the sun's UV rays from breaking down whichever liquid it held.  In my opinion it is one of the most beautiful variations of beach glass. It takes a very sharp eye to spot it!  The photo below shows a brown stain on the glass; that's rust!  The exposure to ambient air causes the iron in the glass to develop a thin coat of rust.  This process can be remedied.  A little vegetable or baby oil shines it up and hampers further rust from forming.

All of our items are hand crafted to order, so please allow 4-7 days for order fulfillment. We use only the finest high quality hypoallergenic chains, clasps, and other various fastening pieces. Each piece of glass is carefully selected from our vast collection. Over the years we've travelled to many beaches, both salt water and fresh water, and slowly compiled our inventory to where it is today. And the day has finally come where we craft beautiful jewelery from the frosty treasures mother nature provided us with!
Don't see the color you want? Feel free to send us an email, because chances are we have it in stock. We're happy to customize your color! Please also indicate your desired chain length and specify the metal color as well. Thanks!

It doesn't get more rare than this. Not only is this the fabled Amberina, but it's UV as well. I'll briefly explain. For many years, stretching back as far as the Depression Era up until roughly the 1960's, glass manufacturers added trace amounts of Uranium for one reason; coloring. What makes this piece pretty much the rarest find is that this contains Uranium as well. Typically Uranium glass was anywhere from a pale yellow to a pale green, and it was used in the production of glass vaseline jars. So the fact that this is UV Amberina and it's pretty large in the way of sea glass, made this truly the best moment of my life as a hound dog. I almost fell to my knees when I discovered it. And for those cautious minded folks, you're probably thinking...Uranium? In medication jars? Yeah, that's real safe. In fact it is. The amount of Uranium used in the production of these vessels was so trivial that it was deemed perfectly safe to own without the fear of any type of radiation hazard.

I call this piece "Around The World". I love this one because it showcases several of the most common colors that can be found in both salt and fresh bodies of water. It's a reminder that glass has many beautiful attributes regardless of being common or rare. These pieces are of fresh water descent.
